Bird-watching, also known as birding, is an exciting and rewarding hobby for those interested in observing and studying the behaviors of birds. For many people, bird-watching begins as a casual interest, but for some, it becomes a lifelong passion. This was certainly the case for me, as I discovered my love for birding during my master’s in Zoology.
In 2017, I purchased an old DSLR camera with a 300 mm lens, which was a basic camera at the time. Every morning, I would venture out into my university premises with my camera and my curiosity, eager to discover and learn more about the birds in my area. I didn’t have a pair of binoculars, so I used my camera to observe and study the birds. I even borrowed an old bird book from the college library to help me identify the birds I saw.
Despite the lack of resources, I was determined to pursue my passion for birding and photography. It was during one of my early morning walks that I saw my first bird, and from then on, I was hooked. As I continued to explore and learn more about the birds in my area, I also became more skilled in bird photography. I spent countless hours capturing images of different bird species and observing their behaviors.
As my passion for birding grew, I decided to make it the focus of my master’s thesis. I spent months studying the birds in my area, learning about their habitats, diets, and behaviors. I also had the opportunity to assist my friends in their fieldwork, where I shared my knowledge and expertise with them.
Over time, I trained many others who shared my passion for wildlife, helping them to pursue their careers in the field of wildlife conservation. I’m proud to have been able to make a positive impact in the lives of those I’ve trained.
My bird-watching journey has been a fulfilling and rewarding one. It has taught me to be patient, observant, and curious about the world around me. I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
Bird-watching is a wonderful hobby that anyone can enjoy. Whether you’re just starting out or have been birding for years, there’s always something new to discover and learn. So grab a pair of binoculars, a camera, and a good bird book, and set out on your own bird-watching journey today!
